Teen Pregnancy - The Issue

Although the teen pregnancy rate in the United States is dropping, the United States still has the highest rate for teen pregnancy in all of the developed countries. 4 out of 10 girls get pregnant at least once before they reach age 20, this results in almost 1 million teen pregnancies each year.

Since the peak in 1990, the teen pregnancy rate dropped by 28% among females aged 15 – 19.

What contributes to the drop in teen pregnancies?

Abstinence Education is credited for 67% of the decrease in teen pregnancy rates among 15 – 19 year old unmarried teenage girls.

Teen Pregnancy Rates – Based on the number of reported pregnancies that occur. Difficult to accurately capture because many teen pregnancies are not reported. Includes the number of live births, abortions and miscarriages.

Abstinence Education is credited for 51% of the decrease in teen birth rates among 15 – 19 year old unmarried teenage girls.

Teen Birth Rates – Based on the number of live births to teen mothers. Lower than the teen pregnancy rates.
